Changing a door handle may seem like a minor alteration, but it's an effective way to refresh the appearance of your home's interior. Whether your current handle is worn out or you're just in the mood for a new look, replacing a door handle is a straightforward DIY task that most people can undertake with little difficulty, enhancing the look of all doors from simple, classic moulded doors to designer solid oak doors. In this article, we'll walk you through the entire process, from choosing the right handle to installing it on your door.

What You Will Need

To ensure a straightforward and successful replacement of your door handle, you will need the following items:

Buying Your New Handle
Before rushing off to buy a new door handle, it's crucial to measure the existing door handle setup accurately. Measure the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the handle (known as the backset), and the size of the current handle’s plate or rose. Buying a new handle that matches these dimensions is the best way to ensure a straightforward replacement. Adapting an existing door to fit a new handle with different dimensions can be challenging and might require more extensive modifications or professional help.

Removing the Old Door Handle

Step 1: Loosen the Screws
Begin by locating the screws that hold your current handle in place. These are typically found on the interior side of the door. Use your screwdriver to loosen and remove these screws. If your handle uses an Allen key, insert it into the small hole usually found on the handle’s side or bottom to loosen the internal screw.

Step 2: Remove the Handle
Once the screws are removed, gently pull both sides of the handle away from the door. If there’s resistance, check for any remaining screws or a small clip holding the spindle (the square connecting rod that turns the latch).

Step 3: Extract the Spindle and Latch
With the handles off, the spindle should be free to slide out. If replacing the latch mechanism (the part that protrudes into the door frame), unscrew it from the edge of the door and gently pull it out.

Installing the New Door Handle

Step 1: Insert the New Latch
If your new handle comes with a latch, insert it into the hole on the edge of the door where the old latch was located. Ensure the tapered side of the latch bolt faces the direction in which the door closes. Secure it with the provided screws.

Step 2: Align the Spindle and Attach Handles
Slide the new spindle through the latch’s centre hole. Align the new handles on each side of the door, ensuring the holes for the screws line up with those in the door. If your handle has a specific orientation (like a thumb lever), make sure it’s positioned correctly.

Step 3: Secure the Handles
Attach the handles by screwing them into place. Make sure they are tight and secure but be careful not to overtighten, as this could damage the screws or handles.

Step 4: Test the Handle
Once everything is assembled, test the handle several times to ensure the latch engages and retracts smoothly. If the handle feels loose or the latch doesn't work as it should, double-check your fittings and tighten any loose components.

Job Done!
Changing a door handle is a manageable project that can be done with minimal tools and expertise. By following these steps and taking the time to measure and prepare properly, you can upgrade the look of your doors and ensure they function smoothly for years to come. With a little patience and attention to detail, this simple DIY task can significantly enhance the interior of your home.
