When planning a bathroom remodel - whether it’s a full renovation or a simple refresh - it’s easy to focus on aesthetic considerations: what tiles to choose, whether to paint or wallpaper the walls and what colour to pick for the blinds. But selecting your essential bathroom furniture is just as important for achieving a polished, professional-looking bathroom.

Whether you're a homeowner upgrading a family bathroom, a landlord fitting out a rental property or a trade professional advising clients, choosing the right bathroom furniture is key to an attractive finished product.

What is bathroom furniture?

The bathroom isn’t somewhere many people think about having furniture in. After all, it’s somewhere to have a wash, brush your teeth and go to the loo - not curl up on a sofa with a cup of tea! But bathroom furniture isn’t necessarily like the items you’d buy for the rest of a house - it’s more about increasing storage to boost the functionality of the room.

Unlike standard household furniture, bathroom furniture is built to withstand high humidity and frequent use, meaning it should last longer in a moist environment. It’s often made from moisture-resistant materials such as treated wood, PVC or MDF with waterproof finishes. You can choose from a wide range of brands, including Vanity Hall and Calypso, each with different styles and designs available.

Whether you’re fitting out a compact en-suite or a spacious family bathroom, adding some bathroom furniture can really transform the space from fine to fantastic, no matter what your tastes are. Below, we identify some of the most common forms of bathroom furniture to help you understand the different types available.

Basin units

Also known as a vanity unit, a basin unit combines your bathroom sink with built-in storage below. As well as providing a handy space to store toiletries, cleaning supplies and other essentials, a basin unit also conceals the pipework attached to your sink - helping the room to look more sleek and stylish.

Depending on the style you choose, basin units can be wall-mounted for a modern, floating look or floor-standing for added storage capacity. Some feature drawers, while others include cupboards with adjustable shelving.

Worktops

Bathroom worktops are durable surfaces installed on top of vanity units or cabinets, providing a practical and stylish area around the basin. Since they’re designed to withstand moisture, heat and daily wear and tear, these surfaces help to protect the material of your cabinets or units and keep your bathroom looking elegant for longer.

Worktops come in a variety of materials to suit all tastes, including laminate (which can itself be made to look like other materials), marble, granite and solid wood. Each option is slightly different in terms of durability, maintenance requirements and aesthetic qualities.

As well as enhancing the overall appearance of your bathroom and helping to protect your furniture, a bathroom worktop can provide a more solid, dependable surface on which to store items, from toiletries and ornaments to potted plants and towels.

Whether you prefer a sleek, modern finish or a more traditional look, the right worktop can tie your whole bathroom aesthetic together.

WC units

WC units, or toilet units, are cabinets designed to conceal the cistern and plumbing behind a toilet in order to create a cleaner, more streamlined look. This helps to reduce visual clutter within your bathroom, ideal for a modern, minimalist aesthetic. Additionally, WC units are available in a range of finishes, so you can easily choose the perfect style to complement the rest of your bathroom design.

As well as improving the visual appeal of a bathroom, WC units can also offer practical benefits. Firstly, like worktops, they are useful for protecting the cistern and pipework attached to toilets from excess moisture and dust, helping it to last longer without needing repair. Like other forms of bathroom furniture, WC units are constructed using highly moisture-resistant materials.

Some models also include a small amount of integrated storage for cleaning supplies or spare toilet rolls. Compact and space-efficient, they’re ideal for small bathrooms, cloakrooms or en-suites where every inch counts.

Whether part of a coordinated fitted furniture set or installed as a standalone feature, a WC unit is a smart choice for anyone looking to modernise and declutter their bathroom space.

Storage units

As well as the storage units mentioned above which integrate with crucial bathroom features - i.e. basin units and WC units - you can also opt for standalone bathroom storage. Often wall-mounted or free-standing, these units offer versatility in that they don’t have to be positioned in a certain place according to the plumbing needs of the room - allowing you to make use of previously unused space.

Freestanding pieces can easily be moved and repositioned to suit different bathroom designs, giving it a longevity favoured in rental properties and with anyone who values flexibility in room arrangements. And like any other form of bathroom furniture, you can get these units in a range of styles and finishes to match the rest of the room.

This kind of storage is ideal for larger bathrooms, as it allows you to take advantage of the extra space, but it can be handy in smaller rooms as well. Standalone storage units provide vital extra storage space for towels, toiletries and cleaning supplies, helping to keep your bathroom tidy and organised.
