<---  Back to Calculators

Our screed and concrete calculator makes estimating materials for concrete slabs, footings, or screed mixes easy. Simply,  input your project dimensions below and our cement calculator will provide the quantities of aggregate, bulk bags, and cement bags required for a durable, long-lasting base.

How to use our concrete mix calculator

Simply follow the steps below to find how much you need:

  1. Select either concrete or screed
  2. Enter the height, width, and depth of your project area
  3. Toggle the switch to indicate whether a sub-base is required
  4. Review your results - the tool calculates the required materials in tonnes, bulk bags, and cement bags
  5. Use the results to browse our range of cement products and utility paving supplies.

What is the difference between concrete and screed?

Whether you require concrete or screed depends on what your project is. Concrete slabs are used for bases like patios or driveways, providing strength and durability. Screed, on the other hand, is a finer mix ideal for creating smooth surfaces, like underfloor heating systems.

Our concrete slab calculator helps you determine exact quantities, minimising waste and keeping costs in check. For liquid screed projects, you can use this as a liquid screed cost calculator to estimate materials efficiently.

How to pour concrete slabs and footings

A concrete slab is a flat, horizontal surface made of poured concrete, typically used as the base for a structure or for paving. Footings, on the other hand, are the foundations upon which a structure is built and provide support for the weight of the building.

To pour the concrete, follow these steps:

  1. Prepare the site - this may include grading the area to ensure a level surface, excavating to the proper depth, and installing any necessary forms or reinforcements
  2. Combine the ingredients of the concrete - Portland cement, sand, gravel, and water are typically used in a specific ratio, known as the ‘mix design’
  3. Mix thoroughly until it reaches a uniform consistency.
  4. Pour the mix into the forms or area where it is needed - make sure to use a consistent and even pouring technique to ensure that the concrete is distributed evenly and without voids or air pockets
  5. Smooth and level the concrete using a tool such as a screed or a trowel
  6. Cure the concrete to ensure its strength and durability -this typically involves keeping the concrete moist and at a consistent temperature for a period of several days.

Once the concrete has been poured and cured, it is ready for use. Depending on the intended use of the concrete, it may need to be finished in a specific way. For example, a concrete slab used for a patio or driveway may need to be stamped or stained to give it a decorative finish, while a footing may need to be covered with dirt or gravel to protect it from the elements.
