<---  Back to Calculators

Our driveway paving calculator takes the guesswork out of estimating the materials you’ll need for your driveway project. Whatever type of driveway block you’re using, this tool helps you accurately calculate the number of blocks, sand, and sub-base materials required to get the job done.

How to use the block paving calculator

  1. Choose either standard 200x100 or Tegula mixed-size blocks.
  2. Enter the length and width of the area to be paved in metres.
  3. Specify whether a sub-base is needed.
  4. Take a look at the results. The tool calculates the number of blocks, kiln dried sand bags and concrete path edgings needed. If you do require a sub-base, it will also tell you how many type 1 and sharp bulk bags you need.
  5. Browse our full range online and place an order so you can get started.

Does the laying pattern impact how many blocks you need?

Our brick driveway calculator gives a rough estimate of what you need as it can vary depending on factors such as compaction, moisture and weather conditions. However, something else you should consider is what pattern you intend on using. There are a variety of different laying patterns including:

  • Herringbone - a diagonal, zig-zag pattern
  • Running bond - horizontal, brick-like pattern
  • Basketweave - alternating blocks to create a woven effect
  • Diagonal - blocks laid to create a diagonal grid.

If you opt for a herringbone pattern, for example, this often involves cutting the slabs, resulting in more offcuts. Therefore, it’s worth ordering some extra blocks to allow for this.

To lay a driveway block driveway, you will need to follow these steps:

  1. Start by planning out the design of your driveway and mark the area where the blocks will be laid. Make sure to take into account the slope of the land and any drainage requirements.
  2. Excavate the area to a depth of at least 250mm, removing any grass, weeds, or other debris. The sub base should be compacted and level to provide a stable foundation for the blocks.
  3. Install a compacted gravel sub base, using a layer of geotextile fabric to separate the gravel from the soil beneath. The depth of the sub base should be at least 100mm, but it can be deeper (150mm is recommended) depending on the soil conditions and the weight of the vehicles that will be using the driveway.
  4. Once the sub base is in place, you can begin laying the driveway blocks. Start by placing a layer of sharp sand over the sub base (40-50mm thick), and then use a long straight edge to screed the sand flat. This will provide a level surface for the blocks to be laid on.
  5. Begin laying the blocks, starting at one end of the driveway and working your way to the other end. Use a rubber mallet to gently tap each block into place, making sure they are level and aligned with the others. Use a spirit level to check that the blocks are level, and make any necessary adjustments as you go.
  6. Once all of the blocks are in place, fill the gaps between them with sand. Use a broom to sweep the sand into the gaps, and then use a hose to lightly mist the blocks to help the sand settle. Repeat this process until the gaps are completely filled.
  7. Finally, compact the blocks with a hand or plate tamper to ensure they are securely in place. You can then add a sealant to the blocks to protect them from the elements and extend their lifespan.

It's important to follow these steps carefully to ensure that your driveway block is properly installed and will last for many years. If you are unsure about any of the steps or have any questions, it's always a good idea to consult with a professional for guidance.
