How much dirt do I need?

Soil, similar to aggregates, is subject to a phenomenon known as bulking factor which refers to the increase in soil volume caused by air gaps between particles. For example, loose soil may appear to take up more space than compacted soil. If you fill up a bucket that can hold 10 litres of soil, when you pour it out, you may only get 8 litres because of the spaces between the particles. This means that the bulking factor for your sand is 1.25, because 10 / 8 = 1.25.
